# Export your first Framer component

This guide walks you through exporting a Framer component and rendering it in a **React app** on your machine. The whole process takes about 5 minutes.

## Prerequisites

* A **Framer project** with at least one component
* **Node.js 18+** installed on your machine

<Aside>
  <Tip>
    If your Framer project has no components yet, select any layer in Framer, right-click, and choose **Create Component**.
  </Tip>
</Aside>

## 1. Install the React Export plugin

Open your Framer project, press **Cmd+K** (or Ctrl+K on Windows), and search for **React Export**. Click install.

You can also install it directly from the [Framer Marketplace](https://framer.link/TGWRs2U).

## 2. Select components and export

Open the plugin. You will see a list of all **components** in your project. Select the ones you want to export and click **Export**.

The plugin saves your component URLs to the Unframer database. This is what the CLI reads in the next step.

<Aside>
  <Note>
    You only need to re-open the plugin when you **add new components**, change color styles, add pages, or modify breakpoints. For existing component updates, just re-run the CLI.
  </Note>
</Aside>

## 3. Create an example app

Run the following command to scaffold a **Vite + React app** with your exported components:

```bash
npx unframer example-app {projectId}
```

Replace `{projectId}` with the short ID shown in the plugin after exporting. The command creates a folder called `example-unframer-app` with a working React app and installs dependencies automatically.

```bash
cd example-unframer-app
npm run dev
```

Open `http://localhost:5173` in your browser. You should see your Framer components rendering as native React.

## 4. Use in an existing project

If you already have a React project, install `unframer` and download your components directly:

```bash
npm install unframer react@19 react-dom@19
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```

Then import the components and the base styles:

```tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Hero from './framer/hero'
export default function App() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Hero />
        </div>
    )
}
```

<Aside>
  <Warning>
    **Disable React Strict Mode.** Strict mode renders components twice, which can break Framer animations. Remove `<StrictMode>` from your entry file if you see animation glitches.
  </Warning>
</Aside>

## 5. Keep components in sync

After making changes in Framer, **publish your site** (the publish button in Framer), then re-run the CLI:

```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```

The generated files are overwritten each time. Do not edit them manually.

You can also use `--watch` to automatically re-export when Framer publishes:

```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer --watch
```

# How Unframer works

Unframer converts your **Framer components** into React component files (`.jsx` by default) that render as native React components. No iframe, no embed. The generated components run in your React app with the lightweight `unframer` runtime package.

└────────────────────┘            └────────────────────────┘            └────────────────────┘
```
## The export pipeline
**Step 1: Plugin collects metadata.** When you click Export in the React Export plugin, it reads all selected components from the Framer SDK: their JavaScript URLs, property controls, breakpoints, color styles, and page structure. This data is sent to the Unframer API.
**Step 2: CLI fetches and bundles.** When you run `npx unframer {projectId}`, the CLI fetches each component's JavaScript URL from Framer's CDN. These URLs point to ES modules that Framer uses internally to render your site.
**Step 3: esbuild bundles everything.** The CLI uses esbuild to resolve all dependencies, inline Framer's internal modules, and produce `.jsx` entry files plus shared `chunks/*.js` files. Code splitting keeps shared code deduplicated. External npm packages used in your Framer code components are resolved and installed automatically.
**Step 4: Types are generated.** Unframer runs each component in Node.js and reads the `propertyControls` field. These controls (the inputs you see in Framer's right panel) are converted into **JSDoc type comments** injected directly into the `.jsx` files. Variants become union types, images become `{src, srcSet, alt}` objects, etc. Your editor picks up these types for autocomplete and type checking without separate declaration files.
**Step 5: Styles are extracted.** A `styles.css` file is generated containing Framer's base styles, the fonts used in your components, and your **color styles** as CSS variables (prefixed with `--unframer-`).
<Aside>
  <Info>
    The exported files are **generated code**. Never edit them manually. Re-run the CLI after making changes in Framer.
  </Info>
</Aside>
## What gets exported
| Output               | Description                                              |
| -------------------- | -------------------------------------------------------- |
| `component-name.jsx` | React component entry file with JSDoc type comments      |
| `chunks/*.js`        | Shared bundled chunks imported by component files        |
| `styles.css`         | Base Framer styles, fonts, and color style CSS variables |
## When to re-run the plugin vs the CLI
The **plugin** saves component metadata to the Unframer database. The **CLI** downloads the latest component JavaScript from Framer's CDN.
| Change in Framer                       | Action needed                              |
| -------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------ |
| Edit existing component content/layout | Re-run CLI only (after publishing)         |
| Add a new component                    | Re-open plugin, select it, then re-run CLI |
| Change color styles                    | Re-open plugin, then re-run CLI            |
| Add new pages                          | Re-open plugin, then re-run CLI            |
| Add new locales                        | Re-open plugin, then re-run CLI            |
| Change breakpoints                     | Re-open plugin, then re-run CLI            |
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    **Publishing is required.** Framer only updates the JavaScript modules behind component URLs when you click the **Publish** button. The CLI reads from these published URLs.
  </Tip>
</Aside>
## Server-side rendering
Unframer components support **SSR** out of the box. They render on the server just like any React component, giving you the same SEO and performance characteristics as a Framer-hosted site. The `styles.css` file ensures fonts and base styles load correctly during SSR.
## Future compatibility
Framer occasionally updates their runtime. Unframer tracks these changes automatically via GitHub Actions, updating the internal [framer.js runtime](https://github.com/remorses/unframer/blob/main/unframer/src/framer.js). An [example app](https://unframer-nextjs-app.vercel.app/) is deployed on every change, making regressions easy to catch and fix.
## Supported component props
Unframer generates TypeScript definitions for all your Framer **component variables**:
* **`variant`** — union type of all variant names
* **Functions** — from `event` variables in Framer
* **Scalars** — string, number, boolean, date
* **Image** — `string` (URL) for basic image controls
* **Responsive image** — `{ src: string, srcSet?: string, alt?: string }`
* **Link** — string URL
* **Color** — CSS color string
* **Component slot** — `React.ReactNode` (from `component` variables like Ticker)
title: "Styling, Dark Mode & Responsive Variants"
url: "http://unframer.co/styling.md"
description: "Customize sizing, colors, dark mode, responsive breakpoints, and localization for your exported Framer components."
---
# Styling & responsive variants
Exported Framer components accept standard React props like `className` and `style`. This page covers how to customize their appearance, use responsive variants, enable dark mode, and work with color styles and localization.
## Overriding styles
Framer components come with **generated CSS classes** for dimensions (fixed width, height, etc.). To override them, use `className` with `!important` or the `style` prop which has higher CSS specificity:
```tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Hero from './framer/hero'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <div>
            {/* className with !important */}
            <Hero className="!w-full !h-auto" />

            {/* style prop (higher specificity, no !important needed) */}
            <Hero style={{ width: '100%', height: 'auto' }} />
        </div>
    )
}
```
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    The `!important` is needed because Framer's generated classes have specific dimensions. The `style` prop is a cleaner alternative since it has higher specificity than class-based styles.
  </Tip>
</Aside>
## Responsive variants
If your Framer component uses **variants** placed inside differently sized frames (breakpoints), Unframer generates a `.Responsive` sub-component. It switches variants based on **CSS media queries**:
```tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Logos from './framer/logos'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <Logos.Responsive
            variants={{
                lg: 'Desktop',
                md: 'Tablet',
                base: 'Mobile',
            }}
        />
    )
}
```
The **variants prop is optional**. By default, Unframer generates the variant mapping automatically from your Framer breakpoints. Only pass `variants` if you want to override the defaults.
Under the hood, `.Responsive` renders all variants and uses CSS `display: none` to show only the active one. Before hydration, unused variants are removed via React's `useSyncExternalStore` for better performance.
## Dark mode
Unframer supports dark mode through the **`dark` CSS class**. Add it to any parent element and all color style variables automatically switch to their dark values:
```tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Hero from './framer/hero'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <div className="dark">
            <Hero />
        </div>
    )
}
```
This is the same pattern **Tailwind CSS** uses. If your app already toggles a `dark` class on `<html>` or `<body>`, Framer components will follow automatically.
## Color styles as CSS variables
Unframer exports all your Framer **color styles** as CSS variables prefixed with `--unframer-`. These are defined in `styles.css`:
```css
:root {
    --unframer-primary: rgb(231, 34, 8);
    --unframer-white: rgb(255, 255, 255);
    --unframer-off-black: rgb(16, 16, 16);
}

.dark {
    --unframer-primary: rgb(231, 34, 8);
    --unframer-white: rgb(16, 16, 16);
    --unframer-off-black: rgb(255, 255, 255);
}
```
You can reference these variables in your own styles, including **Tailwind**:
```tsx
<div className="bg-(--unframer-primary) text-(--unframer-white)">
    Styled with Framer color tokens
</div>
```
## Localization
If your Framer project has **locales** configured, pass the `locale` prop to render component text in a specific language:
```tsx
import Hero from './framer/hero'

<Hero locale="de" />
<Hero locale="it-IT" />
<Hero locale="ja" />
```
To set locale **globally** for all components, wrap your app with `UnframerProvider`:
```tsx
import { UnframerProvider } from 'unframer'

export function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    return (
        <UnframerProvider locale="de">
            {children}
        </UnframerProvider>
    )
}
```
## Client-side navigation
By default, links inside Framer components trigger **full page refreshes**. If you use a framework like Next.js or react-router, pass a `navigate` function to use client-side routing instead:
```tsx
import { useRouter } from 'next/navigation'
import { UnframerProvider } from 'unframer'

export function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    const router = useRouter()

    return (
        <UnframerProvider navigate={router.push}>
            {children}
        </UnframerProvider>
    )
}
```
All Framer components under the provider will use this function for **relative links**, giving you instant page transitions without losing Framer's link behavior.
<Aside>
  <Note>
    For react-router, use `useNavigate()` instead of `useRouter()`. The API is the same: pass the navigate function to `UnframerProvider`.
  </Note>
</Aside>
title: Troubleshooting
url: "http://unframer.co/troubleshooting.md"
description: Solutions for common issues when exporting Framer components to React.
---
# Troubleshooting
Common issues and solutions when using Unframer to export Framer components as React code.
## React Strict Mode breaks animations
**Symptom:** Framer animations play twice, glitch, or don't work at all.
**Fix:** Disable React Strict Mode. Open your entry file (`main.tsx` or `index.tsx`) and remove the `<StrictMode>` wrapper:
```tsx
// Before
createRoot(document.getElementById('root')!).render(
    <StrictMode>
        <App />
    </StrictMode>
)

// After
createRoot(document.getElementById('root')!).render(
    <App />
)
```
Strict Mode renders components twice in development. Framer's animation system is not designed for this and can break.
## React 19 ref warning
**Symptom:** Console warning `Accessing element.ref was removed in React 19`.
**Fix:** This is a **harmless warning**. Framer's internal code still uses the old `element.ref` API. It does not affect functionality. The warning will disappear when Framer updates their codebase to React 19 APIs.
## Hydration mismatch warnings
**Symptom:** Console warning about server-rendered HTML not matching client properties.
**Fix:** This sometimes happens with **SVG icons** in Framer components. It is harmless and only appears in development mode. It does not affect production builds.
## Export fails with esbuild error
**Symptom:** Error like `No matching export in "/:https://esm.sh/zustand" for import "default"`.
**Fix:** Use the `--external` flag to externalize the problematic npm package, then install it manually:
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer --external zustand
npm install zustand@3
```
<Aside>
  <Warning>
    Framer sometimes uses **older versions** of npm packages (e.g. Zustand 3.x). If you externalize a package, make sure you install the **same major version** Framer expects. Check Framer's code component imports to find the right version.
  </Warning>
</Aside>
## "Could not clone my website"
**Symptom:** The export fails entirely or produces empty files.
**Possible causes:**
1. **No components in the project.** Unframer exports components, not raw layers. Select any layer, right-click, and choose **Create Component** first.
2. **Plugin not opened.** The React Export plugin must be opened and components must be selected before the CLI can download anything.
3. **Site not published.** Framer only generates the JavaScript URLs after you click **Publish**. Publish your site, then re-run the CLI.
4. **Outdated CLI.** Run `npm install -g unframer@latest` to update.
## Components render but look wrong
**Symptom:** Components render but have wrong sizes, missing styles, or broken layout.
**Fix checklist:**
1. Make sure you import `styles.css` at the top of your app:
   ```tsx
   import './framer/styles.css'
   ```
2. If components have fixed dimensions, override with `style={{ width: '100%' }}` or `className="!w-full"`.
3. Make sure you're using **React 19**. Older versions can cause rendering issues.
4. Try re-exporting: publish in Framer, then run `npx unframer {projectId}` again.
## `--watch` mode not detecting changes
**Symptom:** The `--watch` flag doesn't trigger a re-export after changes.
**Fix:** The watch mode works by polling the Framer website URL and checking the `etag` header. It only detects changes to **published** components. You must click the **Publish** button in Framer for changes to be picked up.
Also, the watch mode may not detect changes if your modified component is not used on the **main page** of your Framer site.
## Fonts not loading
**Symptom:** Components render with fallback system fonts.
**Fix:** Make sure `styles.css` is imported in your app. The styles file contains `@font-face` declarations for all fonts used in your Framer components. If fonts still don't load, check your bundler's CSS handling configuration.
## Known limitations
* **Framer CMS data** is not exported. Components that rely on CMS collections will render without dynamic content.
* **Framer interactions** (hover effects, click animations) are exported and work. But complex **page transitions** between Framer pages are not preserved.
* **Code components** that use browser-only APIs may need adjustments for SSR environments.
## 1. Turn page sections into components with Framer Agent
Framer 3.0 ships with an **AI agent** built right into the editor. Instead of manually right-clicking each layer and converting it to a component, you can ask the agent to do it all at once.
Open the **Agent panel** on the right side of the Framer editor and type this prompt:
```
Create a component for each top level layer in the current page.
Prefix the component with "Section N" where N is the count
of the section in the current page order.
```
The agent reads your page structure and creates one component per top-level section, naming them **Section 1 Navbar**, **Section 2 Hero**, **Section 3 Features**, and so on. The numbering preserves the visual order of your page, which makes reassembling in React straightforward.
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    For **multi-page sites**, repeat this prompt on each page. The agent works in the context of whatever page is currently selected. You can prefix differently per page, for example "Home Section N" and "About Section N".
  </Tip>
</Aside>
Here is the official Framer 3.0 launch video showing agents in action on the canvas:
<div className="bleed">
  <iframe width="100%" height="400" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/6aioEoCdBJw?autoplay=1&mute=1&loop=1&playlist=6aioEoCdBJw&controls=0&modestbranding=1&rel=0&showinfo=0&iv_load_policy=3" title="Framer 3.0 with Agents, Branching, and a new Community" frameBorder="0" allow="accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture" allowFullScreen style={{ borderRadius: '8px' }} />
</div>
## 2. Export only your section components
Now that every page section is a named component, open the **React Export plugin** (Cmd+K → "React Export").
You will see a list of all components in your project. Instead of clicking "Select All", use the **checkboxes to select only the Section components** you just created. This keeps the export clean. You do not want to export internal sub-components, icons, or small reusable pieces that are already included inside your section components.
After selecting them, click **Export**.
<Aside>
  <Note>
    The numbered prefix ("Section 1", "Section 2") makes it easy to spot your page sections in the component list and select them quickly.
  </Note>
</Aside>
## 3. Create your React project
Start with a fresh Vite + React project:
```bash
npm create vite@latest my-website -- --template react-ts
cd my-website
npm install unframer react@19 react-dom@19
```
## 4. Download your components
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```
Replace `{projectId}` with the short ID shown in the React Export plugin. This creates a `src/framer/` directory with all your section components.
Your project should now look like this:
```
my-website/
├── src/
│   ├── framer/
│   │   ├── section-1-navbar.jsx
│   │   ├── section-2-hero.jsx
│   │   ├── section-3-features.jsx
│   │   ├── section-4-pricing.jsx
│   │   ├── section-5-footer.jsx
│   │   └── styles.css
│   ├── App.tsx
│   └── main.tsx
├── package.json
└── vite.config.ts
```
## 5. Assemble the page in order
Import `styles.css` once at the top of your app, then compose your page from the exported components **in the same order** as your Framer page:
```tsx
// src/App.tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Section1Navbar from './framer/section-1-navbar'
import Section2Hero from './framer/section-2-hero'
import Section3Features from './framer/section-3-features'
import Section4Pricing from './framer/section-4-pricing'
import Section5Footer from './framer/section-5-footer'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Section1Navbar />
            <Section2Hero.Responsive />
            <Section3Features.Responsive />
            <Section4Pricing.Responsive />
            <Section5Footer />
        </div>
    )
}
```
Use `.Responsive` for any component that has **breakpoint variants** (desktop/tablet/mobile). Components without variants can be used directly. The numbered naming makes the ordering obvious at a glance.
<Aside>
  <Warning>
    **Disable React Strict Mode** in `main.tsx`. Remove the `<StrictMode>` wrapper or Framer animations may break.
  </Warning>
</Aside>
## 6. Add routing for multiple pages
If your Framer site has multiple pages (About, Pricing, Contact), set up **react-router**:
```bash
npm install react-router react-router-dom
```
```tsx
// src/main.tsx
import { createRoot } from 'react-dom/client'
import { BrowserRouter, Routes, Route } from 'react-router-dom'
import './framer/styles.css'
import Home from './pages/Home'
import About from './pages/About'
import Contact from './pages/Contact'

createRoot(document.getElementById('root')!).render(
    <BrowserRouter>
        <Routes>
            <Route path="/" element={<Home />} />
            <Route path="/about" element={<About />} />
            <Route path="/contact" element={<Contact />} />
        </Routes>
    </BrowserRouter>
)
```
Each page file imports the relevant Framer section components:
```tsx
// src/pages/Home.tsx
import Section1Navbar from '../framer/section-1-navbar'
import Section2Hero from '../framer/section-2-hero'
import Section5Footer from '../framer/section-5-footer'

export default function Home() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Section1Navbar />
            <Section2Hero.Responsive />
            <Section5Footer />
        </div>
    )
}
```
## 7. Enable client navigation
Framer components contain internal links. To make them use **client-side routing** instead of full page reloads, wrap your app with `UnframerProvider`:
```tsx
// src/main.tsx
import { useNavigate } from 'react-router-dom'
import { UnframerProvider } from 'unframer'

function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    const navigate = useNavigate()
    return (
        <UnframerProvider navigate={navigate}>
            {children}
        </UnframerProvider>
    )
}
```
## 8. Add dark mode (optional)
If your Framer project has dark mode color styles, toggle it by adding the `dark` class to a parent element:
```tsx
<div className={isDarkMode ? 'dark' : ''}>
    <Section1Navbar />
    <Section2Hero.Responsive />
    <Section5Footer />
</div>
```
The exported `styles.css` already contains both light and dark values for all your `--unframer-*` CSS variables.
## 9. Deploy
Your site is now a standard React app. Deploy it anywhere:
**Vercel:**
```bash
npm install -g vercel
vercel
```
**Cloudflare Pages:**
```bash
npm run build
npx wrangler pages deploy dist
```
**Netlify:**
```bash
npm run build
npx netlify deploy --dir=dist --prod
```
## 10. Keep it updated
When you make changes in Framer:
1. **Publish** your Framer site (click the Publish button)
2. Re-run the CLI: `npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer`
3. Rebuild and redeploy your app
For continuous updates, use the `--watch` flag during development:
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer --watch
```
# Deploy to Vercel
This guide shows how to take your exported Framer components and deploy them as a production website on **Vercel**. We will use Vite for simplicity, but the same approach works with Next.js.
## Prerequisites
* Framer components already exported (see [Quickstart](/quickstart))
* A [Vercel account](https://vercel.com)
* Node.js 18+ installed
## 1. Set up the project
```bash
npm create vite@latest my-site -- --template react-ts
cd my-site
npm install unframer react@19 react-dom@19
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```
## 2. Build your pages
Import `styles.css` and compose your components:
```tsx
// src/App.tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Header from './framer/header'
import Hero from './framer/hero'
import Footer from './framer/footer'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Header />
            <Hero.Responsive />
            <Footer />
        </div>
    )
}
```
Remove `<StrictMode>` from `main.tsx` to avoid Framer animation issues.
## 3. Test locally
```bash
npm run dev
```
Verify everything renders correctly at `http://localhost:5173`.
## 4. Deploy to Vercel
**Option A: Push to GitHub** (recommended)
```bash
git init && git add . && git commit -m 'initial commit'
gh repo create my-site --public --push --source .
```
Then import the repo on [vercel.com/new](https://vercel.com/new). Vercel auto-detects Vite and configures the build.
**Option B: Vercel CLI**
```bash
npm install -g vercel
vercel
```
Follow the prompts. Vercel deploys and gives you a production URL.
## 5. Update workflow
When you update your Framer design:
1. Publish in Framer
2. Run `npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer`
3. Commit and push. Vercel rebuilds automatically
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    You can automate step 2 with a **CI script** that runs `npx unframer` before each build. Add it to your `package.json`:
    ```json
    {
        "scripts": {
            "prebuild": "npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer",
            "build": "vite build"
        }
    }
    ```
  </Tip>
</Aside>
# Next.js integration
This guide covers how to use Unframer's exported Framer components in a **Next.js App Router** project with server-side rendering, client navigation, and proper font loading.
## Setup
```bash
npx create-next-app@latest my-site --typescript --app
cd my-site
npm install unframer react@19 react-dom@19
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```
## Import styles globally
Add the Framer styles import to your root layout:
```tsx
// src/app/layout.tsx
import '../framer/styles.css'

export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    return (
        <html lang="en">
            <body>{children}</body>
        </html>
    )
}
```
## Use components in pages
Framer components are **client components** (they use browser APIs for animations). Mark your pages with `'use client'` or wrap the Framer imports in a client component:
```tsx
// src/app/page.tsx
'use client'

import Header from '../framer/header'
import Hero from '../framer/hero'
import Footer from '../framer/footer'

export default function Home() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Header />
            <Hero.Responsive />
            <Footer />
        </div>
    )
}
```
<Aside>
  <Note>
    Framer components support **SSR** out of the box. They render on the server and hydrate on the client, giving you good Lighthouse scores. The `'use client'` directive is needed because they use React hooks internally.
  </Note>
</Aside>
## Client-side navigation
Set up `UnframerProvider` in your layout so Framer's internal links use Next.js routing:
```tsx
// src/app/providers.tsx
'use client'

import { useRouter } from 'next/navigation'
import { UnframerProvider } from 'unframer'

export function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    const router = useRouter()

    return (
        <UnframerProvider navigate={router.push}>
            {children}
        </UnframerProvider>
    )
}
```
```tsx
// src/app/layout.tsx
import '../framer/styles.css'
import { Providers } from './providers'

export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    return (
        <html lang="en">
            <body>
                <Providers>{children}</Providers>
            </body>
        </html>
    )
}
```
## Dark mode
Toggle dark mode by adding the `dark` class to the `<html>` element. If you use `next-themes`:
```tsx
// src/app/layout.tsx
import { ThemeProvider } from 'next-themes'

export default function RootLayout({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    return (
        <html lang="en" suppressHydrationWarning>
            <body>
                <ThemeProvider attribute="class">
                    <Providers>{children}</Providers>
                </ThemeProvider>
            </body>
        </html>
    )
}
```
The `dark` class activates all `--unframer-*` CSS variable dark values automatically.
## Disable Strict Mode
Next.js enables React Strict Mode by default. Disable it in `next.config.ts`:
```ts
// next.config.ts
const nextConfig = {
    reactStrictMode: false,
}
export default nextConfig
```
## Multiple pages
Create additional routes by adding page files:
```
src/app/
├── page.tsx          # Home (/)
├── about/
│   └── page.tsx      # About (/about)
├── pricing/
│   └── page.tsx      # Pricing (/pricing)
├── providers.tsx
└── layout.tsx
```
Each page imports the Framer components it needs. Shared components like Header and Footer go in the layout.
## Example project
See the [Next.js example app](https://github.com/remorses/unframer/tree/main/nextjs-app) for a complete working project. A live demo is deployed at [unframer-nextjs-app.vercel.app](https://unframer-nextjs-app.vercel.app/).
# Vite integration
The simplest way to use exported Framer components. Vite gives you fast development, instant HMR, and an optimized production build.
## Setup
```bash
npm create vite@latest my-site -- --template react-ts
cd my-site
npm install unframer react@19 react-dom@19
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```
## Disable Strict Mode
Open `src/main.tsx` and remove the `<StrictMode>` wrapper:
```tsx
// src/main.tsx
import { createRoot } from 'react-dom/client'
import App from './App'

createRoot(document.getElementById('root')!).render(<App />)
```
## Import styles and components
```tsx
// src/App.tsx
import './framer/styles.css'
import Header from './framer/header'
import Hero from './framer/hero'
import Features from './framer/features'
import Footer from './framer/footer'

export default function App() {
    return (
        <div>
            <Header />
            <Hero.Responsive />
            <Features.Responsive />
            <Footer />
        </div>
    )
}
```
Run `npm run dev` and open `http://localhost:5173`.
## Adding routing
For multi-page sites, add **react-router**:
```bash
npm install react-router react-router-dom
```
```tsx
// src/main.tsx
import { createRoot } from 'react-dom/client'
import { BrowserRouter, Routes, Route, useNavigate } from 'react-router-dom'
import { UnframerProvider } from 'unframer'
import './framer/styles.css'
import Home from './pages/Home'
import About from './pages/About'

function App() {
    return (
        <BrowserRouter>
            <UnframerProviderWrapper>
                <Routes>
                    <Route path="/" element={<Home />} />
                    <Route path="/about" element={<About />} />
                </Routes>
            </UnframerProviderWrapper>
        </BrowserRouter>
    )
}

function UnframerProviderWrapper({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
    const navigate = useNavigate()
    return (
        <UnframerProvider navigate={navigate}>
            {children}
        </UnframerProvider>
    )
}

createRoot(document.getElementById('root')!).render(<App />)
```
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    `UnframerProvider` must be **inside** `BrowserRouter` because it uses `useNavigate()`. Wrap it in a separate component as shown above.
  </Tip>
</Aside>
## Production build
```bash
npm run build
```
The `dist/` folder contains a static site you can deploy to **Vercel**, **Cloudflare Pages**, **Netlify**, or any static hosting.
## Dark mode
Toggle dark mode by adding the `dark` class to a parent element. A simple implementation:
```tsx
import { useState } from 'react'

export default function App() {
    const [dark, setDark] = useState(false)

    return (
        <div className={dark ? 'dark' : ''}>
            <button onClick={() => { setDark(!dark) }}>
                Toggle dark mode
            </button>
            <Hero.Responsive />
        </div>
    )
}
```
All `--unframer-*` CSS variables automatically switch to their dark values when the `dark` class is present.
# Framer MCP
The **Framer MCP plugin** lets AI assistants (Claude, Cursor, Copilot, Codex, etc.) interact with your Framer project directly. They can read your design, modify text, create components, manage CMS content, and export React code, all through natural language.
## What is MCP?
MCP (**Model Context Protocol**) is an open standard that lets AI tools connect to external services. The Framer MCP plugin exposes your Framer project as a set of tools that AI assistants can call.
## What can the AI do?
With Framer MCP connected, your AI assistant can:
* **Read project structure** — get all pages, components, styles as XML
* **Modify text and attributes** — rewrite copy, change colors, update layout
* **Create new nodes** — add frames, text, images, and component instances
* **Manage CMS content** — create collections, add/edit/delete items
* **Work with code files** — create and update code components
* **Export React components** — trigger the React Export pipeline
* **Search fonts** — find and apply fonts from Framer's library
* **Manage styles** — create and update color styles and text styles
## Two modes of operation
### Plugin mode (default)
Requires the **Framer MCP plugin to be open** in the Framer editor. The AI communicates through a WebSocket relay to the plugin running in your browser. This mode has full access to the live editor state.
**Best for:** Interactive design work, real-time modifications, visual feedback.
### Server API mode (headless)
Uses the **Framer API** directly, no browser required. The AI connects to Framer's cloud via a headless Chrome instance. There is an initial delay of \~9 seconds while the Chrome instance spins up.
**Best for:** CI/CD automation, batch operations, scripts that run without a human present.
<Aside>
  <Info>
    Most users should use **Plugin mode**. It is faster for interactive work and gives immediate visual feedback in the Framer editor. Server API mode is for advanced automation use cases.
  </Info>
</Aside>
## Getting started
1. Open your Framer project
2. Press **Cmd+K** and search for **MCP**
3. Install and open the plugin
4. Copy the MCP URL shown in the plugin
5. Follow the [connection guide](/mcp/connect) for your AI tool
## Important: keep the plugin open
The Framer MCP plugin must remain **open** in the Framer editor while you use it. If you close the plugin or switch to a different project, the AI loses its connection.
Only **one MCP plugin** can be active at a time. The AI controls whichever project currently has the plugin open.
> **Important:** Using **Framer MCP** requires that the *Framer MCP plugin is open inside the Framer app*. Only one MCP plugin can be open at any time; the server will control whichever Framer project currently has the plugin open.
## Automatic Install
Run the following command to automatically install Framer MCP to your preferred AI client:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="install" />
This will prompt you to choose which client to install to: Cursor, Claude Code, Claude Desktop, VS Code, Zed, and more.
***
## Manual Install
Below are manual configuration instructions for each AI client.
### Cursor
<InstallInCursorButton />
Or configure manually:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="cursorConfig" />
1. Save to project root, or `~/.cursor/mcp.json`.
2. Restart Cursor and enable Agent mode.
3. Ask in the agent panel: "What tools do you have available?" to make sure Framer MCP is connected.
4. Enable the Framer MCP tool in Cursor settings if it is still disabled.
***
### Claude Code
Use the following command from the current project directory:
> **Important:** You must keep the quotes around the URL or Claude can drop some query params.
<McpCodeBlock snippet="claudeCli" />
This generates the following file:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="claudeProjectConfig" />
> **Important:** The config above only makes Framer MCP available when you call `claude` from the same directory as `.mcp.json`. Omit `--scope project` only if you want the MCP globally available.
***
### Claude Web and Desktop
Claude supports custom MCP connectors on all plans (Free is limited to one connector).
1. Open **Customize → Connectors → +** and select **Add custom connector**.
2. Name the connector `Framer`.
3. Paste this URL:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="claudeConnectorUrl" />
4. Save and enable the connector.
This works on claude.ai, Claude Desktop, and Claude mobile. The connector syncs across all your Claude apps.
If your Claude Desktop version does not support remote connectors yet, you can bridge through `mcp-remote` instead by editing `claude_desktop_config.json`:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="claudeDesktopConfig" />
***
### OpenCode
Create `opencode.json` in your project root, or use `~/.config/opencode/opencode.json` globally:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="opencodeConfig" />
1. Save the config.
2. OpenCode detects and connects to the MCP server.
3. Ask "What tools do you have available?" to verify Framer MCP access.
***
### Zed
Add this to `~/.config/zed/settings.json`:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="zedConfig" />
Reload the Agent panel. A green dot means the server is connected.
***
### VS Code and GitHub Copilot
1. Use VS Code 1.102 or newer with an active Copilot subscription.
2. Open the command palette and run `MCP: Add Server`.
3. Paste the MCP URL. VS Code creates this file:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="vscodeConfig" />
4. Switch Copilot Chat to Agent mode to invoke tools.
***
### Programmatic control via OpenAI JS SDK Responses API
<McpCodeBlock snippet="openaiAgent" />
The agent streams tool calls to Framer MCP and returns status when complete.
***
### Codex Desktop App
The Codex desktop app natively supports streamable HTTP MCP servers. Add this to `~/.codex/config.toml`:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="codexDesktopConfig" />
1. Create or edit `~/.codex/config.toml`.
2. Add the Framer MCP server configuration above.
3. Restart the Codex app for changes to take effect.
4. You can also configure MCP servers from the app via **Settings → Integrations & MCP**.
Keep this config file private because the URL includes your Framer MCP credentials.
***
### Codex CLI
Codex CLI supports streamable HTTP MCP servers natively. Add this to `~/.codex/config.toml`:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="codexCliConfig" />
1. Create or edit `~/.codex/config.toml`.
2. Add the Framer MCP server configuration above.
3. Restart Codex CLI for changes to take effect.
4. Ask Codex "What tools do you have available?" to verify the connection.
***
### Remote MCP bridge for stdio-only clients
If your tool only supports stdio transport, use `mcp-remote` to bridge remote HTTP:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="remoteBridge" />
This creates a local stdio process that forwards to the remote HTTP server.
***
## How to check MCP availability
Ask your assistant:
> Do you have access to the Framer MCP tool?
Then try a small action:
> Rewrite the current page text.
If the integration is successful, the tool should respond or attempt the requested action. If you receive an error about tool access, check that the Framer MCP plugin is open and your configuration matches the relevant section above.
## Unframer CLI
You can also use the `unframer` CLI to interact with Framer MCP directly from your terminal, without needing an AI assistant.
First, save your MCP URL:
<McpCodeBlock snippet="unframerLogin" />
After login, all MCP commands become available. Run `npx unframer --help` to see the full list.
```bash
# Get project structure as XML
npx unframer mcp getProjectXml

# Get a specific node by ID
npx unframer mcp getNodeXml --nodeId "abc123"

# Update a node's text or attributes
npx unframer mcp updateXmlForNode --nodeId "abc123" --xml '<Text nodeId="abc123">New text</Text>'

# Search for available fonts
npx unframer mcp searchFonts --query "Inter"

# List all CMS collections
npx unframer mcp getCMSCollections

# Get items from a CMS collection
npx unframer mcp getCMSItems --collectionId "col123"

# Export React components
npx unframer mcp exportReactComponents

# Run any command with --help for detailed options
npx unframer mcp updateXmlForNode --help
```
# MCP troubleshooting
Solutions for the most common issues when connecting the **Framer MCP plugin** to AI assistants.
## Windows: URL with `&` breaks the command
**Symptom:** On Windows, the `&` in the MCP URL is interpreted as a command separator. You see errors like `'secret' is not recognized as an internal or external command`.
**Fix:** Wrap the entire URL in **double quotes** in your configuration:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "framer": {
            "url": "https://mcp.unframer.co/mcp?id=YOUR_ID&secret=YOUR_SECRET"
        }
    }
}
```
If you are using the `mcp-remote` bridge, wrap the URL in quotes in the args array:
```json
{
    "mcpServers": {
        "framer": {
            "command": "npx",
            "args": [
                "mcp-remote",
                "https://mcp.unframer.co/mcp?id=YOUR_ID&secret=YOUR_SECRET"
            ]
        }
    }
}
```
## OAuth 404 / SSE 405 errors
**Symptom:** Claude Desktop shows `OAuth discovery on mcp.unframer.co returns HTTP 404` or `SSE fallback returns HTTP 405`.
**Fix:** These errors typically mean Claude Desktop is trying an **older MCP transport** that is not supported. Solutions:
1. **Use `mcp-remote` as a bridge.** This handles the transport negotiation for you:
   ```json
   {
       "mcpServers": {
           "framer": {
               "command": "npx",
               "args": [
                   "mcp-remote",
                   "https://mcp.unframer.co/mcp?id=YOUR_ID&secret=YOUR_SECRET"
               ]
           }
       }
   }
   ```
2. **Update Claude Desktop** to the latest version. Newer versions support StreamableHTTP transport natively.
3. If you have a **Claude Max subscription**, use the Connectors feature instead (Settings → Connectors → paste the MCP URL directly).
## WebSocket disconnects on write commands (error 1006/1001)
**Symptom:** Read operations (`getProjectXml`, `getNodeXml`) work fine, but write operations (`updateXmlForNode`) immediately disconnect with WebSocket error code 1006 or 1001.
**Fix:** This is usually a **network stability issue**. The write operations take longer and are more sensitive to connection drops.
1. **Close other browser extensions** that might interfere with WebSocket connections (ad blockers, privacy extensions, VPNs)
2. **Try a different network.** If you are on corporate WiFi, try a phone hotspot
3. **Restart the Framer desktop app** (not just the browser tab)
4. **Reconnect the MCP** in your AI tool settings after restarting
5. If the issue persists, try using **Server API mode** via the `unframer` CLI instead
<Aside>
  <Warning>
    Some **corporate firewalls** and proxy servers interfere with WebSocket connections. If you're on a managed network, ask your IT team about WebSocket policies.
  </Warning>
</Aside>
## Multi-account MCP conflicts
**Symptom:** You have two Framer accounts connected via MCP, but only the first one works. The second account shows as connected (green dot) but the AI says "Framer MCP plugin isn't currently connected."
**Fix:** The MCP identity is **per session**. Only one account can be active at a time.
1. **Disconnect the first account** from your AI tool entirely (remove the MCP server config)
2. **Close the MCP plugin** in the first account's Framer project
3. **Open the MCP plugin** in the second account's project
4. **Re-add the MCP server** in your AI tool with the second account's URL
You cannot use two Framer accounts simultaneously through MCP.
## Secret rotation / exposed URL
**Symptom:** Your MCP URL was accidentally shared (posted on GitHub, shared in a screenshot) and you want to revoke it.
**Fix:** Contact **[tommy@unframer.co](mailto:tommy@unframer.co)** with your MCP URL or Framer email. The session will be revoked within minutes.
After revocation:
1. Open the Framer MCP plugin
2. Log out and log back in
3. Copy the new MCP URL
4. Update your AI tool configuration with the new URL
<Aside>
  <Info>
    The MCP URL contains a **session secret** that grants access to your Framer project. Treat it like a password. Never commit it to public repositories.
  </Info>
</Aside>
## Connection timeouts
**Symptom:** The AI tool shows a timeout after 30-60 seconds when trying to connect.
**Fix checklist:**
1. **Is the Framer MCP plugin open?** The plugin must be open and showing a green status indicator
2. **Did you open the plugin BEFORE configuring the AI tool?** Some tools cache the connection state. Open the plugin first, then configure
3. **Are you using React Export?** Publishing is only needed for React Export or tools that read the published website URL. Canvas and CMS operations work without publishing
4. **Restart the MCP plugin.** Close it (click the X in Framer) and reopen it. This resets the WebSocket connection
5. **Restart your AI tool.** Cursor, Claude Desktop, etc. may need a restart to pick up config changes
## Cursor doesn't show Framer tools
**Symptom:** Cursor is configured but doesn't list Framer MCP in available tools.
**Fix:**
1. Make sure you have a **Cursor Pro subscription** (Agent mode requires Pro)
2. Enable **Agent mode** in Cursor settings
3. Check that the config file is in the right location: `.cursor/mcp.json` in your project root, or `~/.cursor/mcp.json` globally
4. **Restart Cursor** after saving the config
5. Open the Agent panel and ask "What tools do you have available?"
## Quick diagnostic
If something isn't working, ask your AI assistant:
> Do you have access to the Framer MCP tool?
Then try a small read operation:
> Get the project structure
If reads work but writes fail, it is likely a network or timeout issue. If nothing works, the plugin is not connected or the URL is wrong.
# Unframer CLI
The `unframer` CLI has two main capabilities: **exporting Framer components as React code** and acting as a **command-line client for Framer MCP**. This page covers both.
## Installation
```bash
npm install -g unframer
```
Or use `npx` to run without installing:
```bash
npx unframer --help
```
## React Export commands
### Download components
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer
```
Downloads all exported components as `.jsx` files (with JSDoc type annotations) and a `styles.css` file. The `projectId` is the short ID shown in the React Export plugin after exporting.
### Create an example app
```bash
npx unframer example-app {projectId}
```
Scaffolds a complete **Vite + React** app with your components pre-configured. Good for seeing the export in action before integrating into your own project.
### Watch for changes
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer --watch
```
Polls your Framer site URL and re-exports when changes are detected. You must click **Publish** in Framer for changes to be picked up.
### Externalize packages
```bash
npx unframer {projectId} --outDir ./src/framer --external zustand
```
If esbuild fails because of a package conflict, use `--external` to skip bundling that package. Install it manually with `npm install` afterwards.
<Aside>
  <Tip>
    Framer sometimes uses **older versions** of npm packages internally. If you externalize a package, install the same major version Framer expects (e.g. `zustand@3` instead of `zustand@4`).
  </Tip>
</Aside>
***
## MCP CLI commands
The CLI can also act as a direct MCP client, letting you interact with your Framer project from the terminal without an AI assistant.
### Login
```bash
npx unframer mcp login
```
This prompts you to choose between **Plugin mode** (paste the MCP URL from the Framer plugin) or **Server API mode** (enter your Framer API key and project URL). Credentials are saved to `~/.unframer/config.json`.
### Project structure
```bash
# Full project XML (pages, components, styles)
npx unframer mcp getProjectXml

# Specific node by ID
npx unframer mcp getNodeXml --nodeId "abc123"

# Published website URLs
npx unframer mcp getProjectWebsiteUrl
```
### Modifying content
```bash
# Update text or attributes
npx unframer mcp updateXmlForNode \
    --nodeId "abc123" \
    --xml '<Text nodeId="abc123">New heading text</Text>'

# Search fonts
npx unframer mcp searchFonts --query "Inter"
```
### CMS operations
```bash
# List all collections
npx unframer mcp getCMSCollections

# Get items from a collection
npx unframer mcp getCMSItems --collectionId "col123"

# Create or update an item (use field IDs from getCMSCollections, not field names)
npx unframer mcp upsertCMSItem \
    --collectionId "col123" \
    --slug "my-post" \
    --fieldData '{"j11rZL4rT": {"type": "string", "value": "Hello"}}'

# Delete an item
npx unframer mcp deleteCMSItem --collectionId "col123" --itemId "item456"
```
### Code files
```bash
# Create a code component
npx unframer mcp createCodeFile \
    --name "MyComponent.tsx" \
    --content "export default function MyComponent() { return <div>Hello</div> }"

# Read a code file
npx unframer mcp readCodeFile --codeFileId "code123"

# Update a code file
npx unframer mcp updateCodeFile \
    --codeFileId "code123" \
    --content "// updated code"
```
### Export React components
```bash
npx unframer mcp exportReactComponents
```
This triggers the same export pipeline as the React Export plugin, returning the CLI command to download the components.
<Aside>
  <Warning>
    `exportReactComponents` requires **Plugin mode** (the Framer MCP plugin must be open). It uploads the export through the authenticated plugin session. Server API mode cannot create a React Export project.
  </Warning>
</Aside>
### Help
Every command supports `--help` for detailed options:
```bash
npx unframer mcp updateXmlForNode --help
npx unframer --help
```
## Server API mode
In Server API mode, the CLI connects directly to Framer's cloud API without needing the browser plugin open. Use `--project` to specify which project to operate on:
```bash
npx unframer mcp getProjectXml --project "https://framer.com/projects/My-Project--abc123"
```
Expect an **initial delay of \~9 seconds** while the headless Chrome instance spins up. Each CLI invocation connects to Framer, runs the command, then disconnects when finished.
<MCPTool {...{"name":"updateXmlForNode","description":"Update the XML for a node using its nodeId and passing a new XML string. It can be used to update nodes text or attributes, reorder nodes in the XML tree, or create new nodes.\n\nIMPORTANT: Call getProjectXml first to see available node attributes, pre-built section components, and project structure.\n\n## Node Creation\n\nNodes without a nodeId attribute will be created as new nodes. To create a new node, simply omit the nodeId attribute. The node type is determined by the content and attributes:\n- Nodes with layout attributes (layout=\"stack\" or layout=\"grid\") become Frame nodes\n- Nodes with svg attribute become SVG nodes\n- Nodes with componentId or insertUrl attributes become ComponentInstance nodes. This is the PREFERRED way to insert components with full attribute support in one step. Get the insertUrl using getComponentInsertUrlAndTypes first.\n  - **Linked components** (default): Use insertUrl as-is to create a linked component instance that updates when the source component changes\n  - **Detached components**: Add ?detached=true query parameter to insertUrl (e.g., insertUrl=\"https://framer.com/m/Button.js?detached=true\") to create detached/unlinked layers. The component's internal structure becomes editable regular nodes (Frame, Text, etc.) that won't update with the source. IMPORTANT: After creating a detached component, you MUST call getNodeXml on the parent node again to see the actual internal structure that was created, as it will contain multiple child nodes (Text, Frame, SVG, etc.) from the component's definition.\n- Nodes with text content become Text nodes. To add a text node you must create a new wrapping element too and omit its nodeId, you CANNOT add text to an existing element that does not already contain text\n\nThe tag name of new nodes will be used for the new node title in Framer, it has no semantic meaning\n\nWhen creating a new node ALWAYS mention the node before and after it so that it can be put in the right place. Also ALWAYS wrap it with a known nodeId wrapper node (usually the same nodeId used in the tool params).\n\nThe tool output will contain the newly created node ids, in following calls you MUST use those nodeIds to reference the newly created nodes.\n\nIMPORTANT! You cannot add text content to an existing element with an existing nodeId it if does not already contain text! Instead put the new text inside a wrapper Text element\n\n## Node Updates\n\nIf a node id changes its parent, it will be moved in the tree.\n\nDo not pass a string too large in this tool, instead call this tool multiple times and pass only the nodes you want to update, omit attributes or nodes that you don't need to update.\n\nCall this tool multiple times instead of batching all the updates in one tool call. This way the user will be able to see your changes in real-time in the Framer canvas.\n\nThis tool is generally called using a component or page nodeId and passing a portion of the XML tree. To delete nodes you should use deleteNode instead. If a node is omitted it will not be deleted.\n\nYou can pass a partial a XML string, there is no need to include the full XML structure, missing nodes will be ignored. You can also omit attributes, omitted attributes will be ignored.\n\n## Capabilities\n\nYou can use this tool to:\n- Create new nodes by omitting nodeId attribute (Frame, Text, SVG, ComponentInstance)\n- Insert components as linked instances or detached layers (use insertUrl with optional ?detached=true)\n- Update text content for one or multiple nodes\n- Update attributes of existing nodes\n- Reorder nodes in the tree by changing their parent or position\n- Create wrapper layers by placing existing nodes inside new nodes\n\nFor adding sections (hero, pricing, footer, etc.), see the Pre-built Section Components documentation in getProjectXml output.\n\nThis tool CANNOT be used for:\n- Code files (use 'updateCodeFile' instead)\n- Color styles (use 'manageColorStyle' with type: 'update' instead)\n- Text styles (use 'manageTextStyle' with type: 'update' instead)\n- Deleting nodes (use 'deleteNode' instead)\n\n## Return Value\n\nReturns a summary of changes made, followed by a diff patch showing the XML changes in unified diff format.\n","inputSchema":{"$schema":"https://json-schema.org/draft/2020-12/schema","type":"object","properties":{"nodeId":{"type":"string","minLength":1,"description":"The ID of the node to update"},"xml":{"type":"string","minLength":1,"description":"XML string containing the updates. <Update id={"unframer@4.2.1"} label={"Sep 18, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.2.1
  1. **Fixed `unframer mcp updateXmlForNode` on pages that are not open** — Framer only fully loads the canvas root. For every other page `framer.getNode(id)` returned null even though the node exists, so edits answered that no attributes were valid. Node lookup now falls back to a project-wide index:
     ```bash
     npx unframer mcp updateXmlForNode --nodeId "abc123" --xml '<Text nodeId="abc123">New text</Text>'
     ```
     Structural writes outside the loaded scope are reported as real failures instead of a fake success.
  2. **Fixed the daily Framer runtime download** — two upstream refactors had broken the `framer.js` patches. `combinedCSSRules` is still exported as a `string[]` after Framer wrapped it in a LazyProp getter. The lazy module import now keeps both bundler ignore comments even when Framer ships its own `@vite-ignore`:
     ```js
     import(/* webpackIgnore: true */ /* @vite-ignore */ url)
     ```
  3. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — refreshed to the latest `framer@2.4.1` release.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.2.0"} label={"Jun 29, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.2.0
  1. **Multiple project IDs in a single command** — pass multiple Framer project IDs to bundle all components together with automatic chunk deduplication:
     ```bash
     # Single project (unchanged)
     unframer 080b0b6d577bdc21 --jsx --external --outDir ./src/framer

     # Multiple projects merged into one output
     unframer 080b0b6d577bdc21 4f7c408e7441586d --jsx --external --outDir ./src/framer
     ```
     When multiple projects have components with the same path slug, the second project's component is disambiguated by prefixing with the project name slug.
  2. **Framer Motion internals exported from root** — deterministic renderers can now import Framer Motion frame timing internals directly from `unframer`:
     ```ts
     import {
       JSAnimation,
       MotionGlobalConfig,
       _injectRuntime,
       frameData,
       frameSteps,
       time,
       visualElementStore,
     } from 'unframer'
     ```
  3. **New `mcp eval` command** — run arbitrary `framer-api` code against a Framer project for quick testing and debugging:
     ```bash
     unframer mcp eval --project '<framer-project-url>' \
       'await framer.getNodesWithType("ComponentNode")'
     ```
  4. **Fixed stale JSX files when formatting fails** — when babel/biome formatting fails or a component exceeds the 717KB size limit, the .jsx file was left with old chunk hashes causing UNRESOLVED\_IMPORT errors in Vite builds. Now writes unformatted JS as fallback
  5. **Fixed chunk .js files accidentally deleted** by the .jsx equivalence check
  6. **Fixed hydration mismatch in WithFramerBreakpoints** — missing IsInitialNavigationContext provider
  7. **Stubbed dead Framer editor-only modules** at esbuild level during download, reducing bundled framer.js size
  8. **Removed dead esbuild-plugins-node-modules-polyfill** dependency
  9. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** to the latest release
  10. **Updated Vite peer dependency to v8**
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.9"} label={"Jun 3, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.9
  1. **Fixed React hydration errors in exported components** — added `suppressHydrationWarning` to all generated JSX elements so server-rendered Framer components no longer produce hydration mismatch warnings. The babel plugin correctly skips `React.Fragment` (which only accepts `key` and `children`)
  2. **Fixed hydration tree structure mismatch with `withCSS`** — the server rendered `Fragment > [style, Component]` but the client rendered just `Component`, shifting every child position and breaking React Aria ID generation (e.g. HeroUI Tabs). Server and client now render the same tree shape
  3. **Fixed breakpoint hydration mismatch** — `WithFramerBreakpoints` was reading `window.innerWidth` during hydration, causing the client to render fewer variants than the server. Now returns empty string consistently during hydration
  4. **Fixed production builds crashing on unsafe Framer color tokens** — color style values containing CSS-structural characters (`;`, `{`, `}`) broke the generated `styles.css` by closing the `:root {}` block early. Vite's lightningcss minifier rejected the invalid CSS. Unsafe tokens are now filtered out with a warning
  5. **Fixed missing `styles.css` when a single component type extraction fails** — a single component failure now logs and continues instead of aborting the entire build
  6. **Removed `spiceflow` dependency** — replaced the generated API client with a single inline `fetch()` call, removing \~1200 lines of generated code
  7. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — refreshed to latest `framer@2.4.1` with `suppressHydrationWarning` applied to all JSX elements in the runtime
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.8"} label={"May 24, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.8
  1. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — refreshed the packaged Framer internals to `framer@2.4.1` with the latest runtime code and framer-motion assets
  2. **Fixed exporter and TypeScript modules pulling in the full framer.js runtime** — `exporter.ts` and `typescript.ts` imported `ControlType`, `ControlDescription`, and `PropertyControls` directly from `framer.js`, dragging in the full 360KB runtime plus all framer-chunks at bundle time. These now import from a standalone `framer-types.ts` module, avoiding the framer.js dependency entirely
  3. **Fixed old framer-chunks accumulating across runtime updates** — the download script never cleaned the `framer-chunks/` directory before writing new content-hashed chunks, causing old files to pile up across runs
  **npm package size reduced by 90%** — from 196 MB unpacked (15 MB tarball) down to 18.8 MB unpacked (2.6 MB tarball), and from 468 files to 357. The bloat came from old framer-chunks never being cleaned between runtime updates.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.7"} label={"Apr 22, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.7
  1. **Fixed `--external` flag silently failing** — the `--external` CLI flag was parsed as an empty string when used without a package name, but the code only checked for `true`. This meant npm dependencies were always fetched from esm.sh and bundled instead of externalized, causing `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` errors during type extraction. Now `--external` correctly externalizes all npm packages:
     ```bash
     # Externalize all npm deps (now works correctly)
     unframer <projectId> --external

     # Externalize a specific package
     unframer <projectId> --external react
     ```
  2. **Fixed duplicate import errors when a component appears multiple times on a page** — when the same Framer component was used more than once on the index page (e.g. `image-3` appearing twice), the generated example code emitted duplicate `import` statements with the same identifier, causing vite/rolldown to fail with `Identifier has already been declared`. Imports are now deduplicated while keeping all JSX usages intact.
  3. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — refreshed the packaged Framer internals to the latest version, including new shader features (mouse input uniforms, feedback loops, heightmap generation) and font metadata updates.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.6"} label={"Apr 9, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.6
  1. **Fixed duplicate import identifiers in generated example code** — projects with components that share the same leaf name in different folders no longer get broken sample apps with redeclared imports. Parent folders are only folded into the generated identifier when a collision actually exists, so stable component names stay unchanged for non-conflicting components.
  ```bash
  import CardWorkCardFramerComponent from './src/framer/card/work-card'
  import CardsWorkCardFramerComponent from './src/framer/cards/work-card'
  ```
  2. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — refreshed the packaged `framer@2.4.1` and Framer Motion runtime assets, including the latest bundled Google font metadata used during component exports.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.5"} label={"Mar 22, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.5
  1. **Fixed crash when esm.sh returns a relative redirect URL** — packages like `ogl` that redirect to a relative path (e.g. `/ogl@1.0.11/src/index.js`) no longer cause `TypeError: Failed to parse URL`. The redirect is now resolved against the original request URL before following.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.4"} label={"Mar 21, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.4
  1. **Fixed `@font-face` breaking with font names containing apostrophes** — font names like `"Suisse Int'l Thin"` were wrapped in single quotes, producing invalid CSS (`font-family: 'Suisse Int'l Thin'`). The declaration is now wrapped in double quotes so apostrophes in font names don't terminate the string.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.3"} label={"Mar 20, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.3
  1. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — updated to framer\@2.4.1 with latest Framer internals
  2. **Fixed duplicate CSS variable declarations** — when multiple Framer color tokens share the same user-facing name (e.g. two tokens both named `black` with different UUIDs), the generated CSS no longer emits duplicate `--unframer-*` declarations that silently overwrite each other
  3. **Fixed broken font unicode-range subsetting** — `@font-face` blocks were emitting `unicodeRange:` (camelCase) instead of the valid `unicode-range:` CSS property; browsers silently ignored it, so font subsetting was completely broken for all generated components
  4. **Fixed crash in TypeScript type inference** — `typescriptType()` no longer throws `Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'type')` when a `ControlType.Array` or `ControlType.Object` control has an undefined nested control entry
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.2"} label={"Feb 28, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.2
  1. **Fixed `unframer mcp` crash on Node 22** — server-api mode no longer throws `ERR_UNKNOWN_FILE_EXTENSION` at startup. The handler code previously imported from `unframer/src/typescript` and `unframer/src/compat` which resolve to raw `.ts` files that Node 22 refuses to load. These are now exported from the main `unframer` entry point.
  2. **Fixed missing runtime dependencies in server-api mode** — `htmlparser2`, `dom-serializer`, `camelcase`, and `sema4` are now declared as dependencies so they are available when `unframer mcp` runs handler code in-process.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.1"} label={"Feb 27, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.1
  1. **Fixed server-api mode crash on startup** — `unframer mcp` in server-api mode no longer throws `ERR_MODULE_NOT_FOUND` for `framer-plugin` when running headless. The handler module now correctly resolves imports through the `framer-api` server shim.
  2. **Updated bundled Framer runtime** — latest Framer internals with new Google font chunks.
</Update>
<Update id={"unframer@4.1.0"} label={"Feb 24, 2026"}>
  ## unframer\@4.1.0
  **Server API mode** — headless MCP without Framer open
  `unframer mcp login` now lets you choose between two modes:
  * **Plugin mode** (default): requires Framer open with the MCP plugin running
  * **Server API mode**: headless, no browser needed — uses `framer-api` with a Framer API key + project URL
  ```bash
  unframer mcp login
  # → select "Server API" → enter API key + project URL
  ```
  Pass `--project <url>` on any command to use server-api for a single invocation, even if logged in with plugin mode:
  ```bash
  unframer mcp getProjectXml --project https://framer.com/projects/MyProject--abc123
  ```
  **`UNFRAMER_MCP_URL` env var** — override the saved MCP URL without touching `~/.unframer/config.json`, useful for CI/CD:
  ```bash
  UNFRAMER_MCP_URL="https://mcp.unframer.co/mcp?id=...&secret=..." unframer mcp getProjectXml
  ```
  **Other changes**
  * Migrated CLI framework from `@xmorse/cac` to `goke`
  * Removed `mcp skill` command — `unframer --help` now shows all MCP commands
  * API key prompt now shows `*` mask characters while typing
